[Alnus incana subsp. rugosa is largely absent from eNfld., it is reported from only one site on the Avalon (St. John's area; possibly introduced) and one site north of Port au Choix, but it is the dominant component of the Alder Swamp forest type in central Nfld. (W.J. Meades & Moores, 1989). Labrador reports of Alnus glutinosa by Schrank, 1818, are probably based on Alnus rugosa var. americana (Scoggan 1978). The basionym of Alnus incana (L.) Moench is Betula alnus L. var. incana L.]
