[Boivin (1966), believes the type of Betula borealis Spach to belong to Betula pumila L. (Roland & Smith, Flora of Nova Scotia, 1969; FNA v3). An unnamed hybrid of Betula michauxii × B. pumila var. pumila was reported from TNNP neNfld. (Brouillet et al. 1997). The accepted common name in Canadensys (VASCAN), southern bog birch, is replaced here by the common name eastern bog birch, since the range of Betula pumila var. pumila extends across the eastern half of Canada, extending from NL to nON, while the range of var. glandulifera extends from Quebec west to B.C. and the Yukon.]
