Following the treatment of this European species in Plants of the World Online (POWO) and the New Flora of the British Isles, 3rd edition (Clive Stace 2010), Carex viridula Michx. subsp. oedocarpa (Andersson) Crins (1989) is again being treated as Carex demissa Hornem. (1806).  The typical subspecies, C. demissa Hornem. subsp. demissa, is the taxon introduced in eastern Canada, specifically Québec, Nova Scotia, and Newfoundland & Labrador.  One other subspecies (subsp. cedercreutzii) is endemic to and restricted in range to the Azores.
