[Aronia ×prunifolia is considered to be a stabilized hybrid, which means it originated through hybridization, but is fertile and able to reproduce independent of the parental species. Since Aronia arbutifolia does not occur in NL, the range of Aronia ×prunifolia likely spread to NL after this hybrid became stabilized. Scoggan (1978) states that the Nfld. report of Aronia arbutifolia by Robinsion & von Schrenk, 1896 (reported as Pyrus arbutifolia), is based on Aronia ×prunifolia (Pyrus arbutifolia var. atropurpurea) (CAN). Labrador reports of Aronia ×prunifolia require verification. See Kartesz & Gandhi (1992b) for a discussion of nomenclatural problems in Aronia.]
