[In the 2019 version of the NL checklist, this species, under the name Viola pallens (Banks ex Ging.) Brainerd, was included as a synonym of Viola macloskeyi F.E.Lloyd, based on the 2015 treatment of Viola in Flora of North America (FNA).  This species is now recognized as disinct, based on recent molecular research by Marcussen et al. (2022). However, the name V. pallens cannot be used for this species, as the type specimen of its basionym, V. rotundifolia var. pallens Banks ex Ging., is actually a specimen of V. palustris L. subsp. palustris.  The next available name that applies to this species, based on priority, is Viola minuscula Greene (1906).  An unnamed hybrid white violet of V. minuscula × V. renifolia is known from nNfld., previously reported as V. macloskeyi × V. renifolia.]
