[In the 2019 version of this checklist, Viola septentrionalis was included as a synonym of Viola sororia Willd., following the 2015 treatment of Viola in volume 6 of Flora of North America (FNA). Viola septentrionalis is once again recognized as distinct, based on molecular research by Marcussen et al. (2022). The range of V. septentrionalis extends from insular Nfld. to central Ontario, and is disjunct in the Rocky Mts., while the range of V. sororia is restricted to southern Ontario, seSK, and the eastern United States. In Nfld., Viola septentrionalis is known from ravines and moist thickets along streams (Bouchard et al. 1991).]
