[Juncus pylaie can be found in oligotropic bogs, swampy thickets, and other wet habitats. J. pylaie can be differentiated from other native species in the J. effusus group in Nfld. by its firm dark green stems and the presence of basal sheaths that are purplish at the base, while the stems of J. effusus var. solutus are more easily compressed and the basal sheaths are drab to brownish, or straw-coloured above (Fernald 1950, 1970). The type of J. pylaie is from Île de St-Pierre et Miquelon.]
