[Some sources follow a treatment that reduces V. cassinoides to varietal status under V. nudum L. (possumhaw), a tall arborescent shrub or small tree from the seUS. Comparing a few traits of the two species, Viburnum cassinoides is 1-3 m tall, inflorescences are borne on stalks 1.3 cm long, anthers are exserted 1-3.5 mm above the corolla, and the fruits are sweet-tasting (hence the common name), while V. nudum is 3-6 m tall, inflorescences stalks are 3.5 cm long, anthers are exserted 4-5 mm above the corolla, and fruits are bitter tasting. See Fernald (1950, 1970) for full descriptions of both species.]
