[Although not recognized in FNA, this species is usually treated in Europe, as well as the PAF as having two subspecies. The typical subspecies occurs in the more southern range, while subsp. alpestre (Hartm.) Uotila occupies more northern (arctic) areas. A broad hybrid zone occurs where these two subspecies meet and material from this area, including Newfoundland and Labrador, Greenland, and Kamchatka, was described as L. annotinum var. pungens Desv. ex Spring (T. Ahti, pers. comm., April 2015; Elven et al. 2011). Note that the authority of var. pungens should be cited as Desv. ex Spring, since the name in Desvaux's original 1827 publication was an invalid nomen nudum. The name L. annotinum var. pungens Bach.Pyl. ex Desv. (1827) is also invalid, as this name was listed in synonymy; Bachelot de la Pylaie did not make a valid publication in this taxon, so combinations with Bach.Pyl. listed as the basionym are in error.]
