[The type specimen of Viola pallens (Viola rotundifolia Michx. var. pallens Banks ex Ging.) is actually a specimen of Viola palustris (Marcussen et al. 2022), therefore the name Viola pallens cannot be applied to the glabrous stemless white violet in our region and all combinations of Viola pallens based on the type specimen are now listed in synonymy under Viola palustris.  The new name for the glabrous, stemless white violet in NA, based on priority, is Viola minuscula Greene (northern white violet).  Please refer to Viola palustris or Viola minuscula.]
