Solidago lepida var. elongata (Nutt.) Fernald, an eastern Canadian taxon whose type specimen was collected by Fernald & Wiegand at Harry’s River, wNfld. in 1910, is considered to be a misapplication of the name Solidago elongata Nutt, a western goldenrod from British Columbia. This taxon is now called Solidago bartramiana, described by Fernald in 1915 from a Grand Falls specimen collected in 1911 by Fernald, Wiegand, Bartram, and Darlington; the type specimen is in Gray Herbarium, Harvard Univ. However, in 2013, Semple described a new goldenrod species, Solidago brendae, which, in 2023, he realized was identical to Fernald’s Solidago bartramiana. Reports of Solidago canadensis var. canadensis and Solidago brendae from NL are referred to either S. bartramiana or S. fallax. For more information, see Semple, J.C. 2023.
