[The Newfoundland harebell had long been known by the scientific name Campanula rotundifolia L.; recent research indicated that this name refered only to European harebells. The first validly published name applied to North American and Greenland harebells was Campanula gieseckeana Vest ex Schult. (Roemer & Schultes 1819, vol 5:89). This name was originally spelled by Vest as 'giesekiana', but has been corrected as per the International Code of Botanical Nomenclature to 'gieseckeana.' However, more recent treatments by North American authorities have determined that the differences are not significant and we are back to using the original name, Campanula rotundifolia.
