Although reported as the dominant subspecies in NL, based on Löve & Löve's work (1959), subsp. hermaphroditum has been reported by botanists working in NL to occur mainly above timberline along the Long Range Mts. and in other very exposed habitats in Nfld., also probably common in Labrador (T. Ahti, J. Maunder, pers. comm., June 2015). Plants of this subspecies have perfect (bisexual) flowers; in fruit, remnants of the dried stamens may persist at the top of the berries.
