[Synonyms related to Vaccinium nigrum (Alph.Wood) Britton, usually listed in synonymy under Vaccinium angustifolium, have been excluded here, since these two taxa are quite distinct in northern Ontario (Meades et al. 2014) and should probably be treated as separate species, or at least distinct varieties. Newfoundland specimens at the Corner Brook herbarium of Canadian Forestry, labelled by T. Damman as V. angustifolium var. nigrum were examined and referred to typical V. angustifolium. There are no known specimens of V. nigrum from NL. Vaccinium nigrum can be recognized easily by it elliptic to oblanceolate glaucous leaves and black berries that lack a glaucous bloom. Also, the leaf margins lack the short curved hairs between marginal teeth, characteristic of Vaccinium angustifolium.]
