[Molecular research by R.M. Bateman, Pridgeon, & Chase (1997) concluded that the genus Coeloglossum should be included in the genus Dactylorhiza. However, not all authorities agree with this change; subsequent research places Coelogossum as a sister clade to Dactylorhiza (Devos et al., 2006, Tyteca & Klein. 2008) and suggests that both genera should be recognized as distinct. Until future research definitively clarifies the relationship between these two genera, we retain Coeloglossum viride as the accepted name. Two varieties of C. viride were historically recognized in Newfoundland: var. viride and var. virescens (Bouchard et al., 1991). However, these varieties are no longer considered to be taxonomically significant, as the size variation in this species appears to be controlled by degree of exposure in the habitat. Although Luer's map (1975) shows Coeloglossum extending into Labrador, the first verified record from Labrador was made by C. Hanel (2005) from the Labrador Straits, seLab., while a Labrador specimen at NFM has been reannotated to Platanthera huronensis (J. Maunder, pers. comm., 11/2000).]
