[Platanthera grandiflora is known from several areas across Nfld., but has not been found on either the Avalon or Great Northern Peninsula (Bouchard et al., 1991). Two unnamed hybrids of Platanthera grandiflora occur in Nfld. The first, P. grandiflora × P. lacera, was described from wNfld. by P.M. Brown (1993) as P. ×keenanii (Keenan’s fringed orchid), but since a Latin diagnosis was not provided (Kartesz & Gandhi 1995), this name is considered to be invalid (nom. inval.) and cannot be recognized unless validly published. The second hybrid, P. grandiflora × P. psycodes, was reported from swNfld., by P.M. Brown and named P. ×enigma. Although a Latin description was provided, IPNI notes that "The Latin statement does not mention how the hybrid species differs from its parents," thus, this name is also invalid. Those species of Platanthera with a fringed labellum (Sections Blephariglottis and Lacera) are often referred to by the English vernacular 'fringed orchids', or 'fringed-orchids'; if the use of a hyphen is preferred, it should be placed after the word 'fringed', as used by Luer (1975); i.e.: the preferred English vernacular for P. blephariglottis is white fringed-orchid, rather than white-fringed orchid.]
