[Molecular research by Bateman and others have shown that Piperia belongs in the genus Platanthera (R.M.Bateman et al. 1997, 2003, 2009), although R. Lauri (2010) recognizes Piperia as a distinct genus. More discussion is expected on the placement of this species. A single specimen of P. unalascensis was collected on the Great Northern Peninsula (Doctor's Brook area) by L. Johnson in 1996; the specimen was identified by P. Catling. Additional plants were located near the original site by the NFRPP in 2000.]
