[A specimen (MT) of Anthoxanthum monticola subsp. alpinum was verified from Nfld.; both subspecies of A. monticola occur infrequently or rarely in NL. Note that while the feminine ending of the specific epithet 'monticola' seems to disagree with the masculine genus (Anthoxanthum) and subspecies (alpinum) names, 'monticola' is considered to be a noun in apposition. ICBN rules (Article 23.5) state that when the specific epithet of a species name is a noun in apposition, "it retains its own gender and termination irrespective of the gender of the generic name".]
