[Festuca brachyphylla is know from limestone barrens in northern and western Nfld. (Bouchard et al., 1991). Recent fieldwork (NFRPP 1999) has shown this species to be more frequent than collections indicate. Fernald (1926) described this taxon (which he called Festuca supina Schur) as "abundant on calcareous gravels, Straits of Belle Isle." Festuca brevifolia R.Br. is an illegitimate homonym, making F. ovina var. brevifolia S.Watson the accepted basionym. The authority for F. rubra var. brachyphylla is often given as (Schult.) Hitchc.; however, Hitchcock & Chase (1951) list (Schult.) Piper as the authority. NL reports of Festuca hyperborea refer to F. brachyphylla.]
