[Some varieties of Festuca rubra are believed to be native in coastal areas and inland water systems. A coastal Atlantic Canada taxon may be segregated after ongoing research is complete (Aiken et al., 1987, 1996+). A few European varieties, most notably F. rubra var. commutata (Chewings fescue), have been introduced as turf or lawn grass cultivars. The combinations F. rubra var. juncea and subsp. juncea have both been attributed to K. Richt., however, the MBG Poaceae Database gives an 1890 reference only for the subsp. juncea combination. Concerning Festuca duriuscula L., the type has been shown to belong to the Festuca rubra group.]
