[Recently, the species name Alnus viridis (Chaix) DC. was found to be an illegitimate name, synonymous with subsp. fruticosa, the Siberian alder, native to northern Asia and western Canada. The correct species name for this taxon is now Alnus alnobetula (Ehrh.) K.Koch (Greuter & Von Raab-Straube 2011); all subspecies names of A. viridis have been transferred to A. alnobetula. The basionym of Alnus alnobetula (Ehrh.) K.Koch is Betula alnobetula Ehrh.]
