Ribes oxyacanthoides L. var. oxyacanthoides
En: Canada gooseberry, northern gooseberry, bristly wild gooseberry
Fr: groseillier du Nord, groseillier fausse épine
Provincial Status: L
Range: Boreal NA; cLab., on an island NNE of North West River.

[=Grossularia oxyacanthoides (L.) Mill.]
[=Ribes oxyacanthoides L. subsp. oxyacanthoides]

[Ribes oxyacanthoides was first verified in the province from central Labrador (on and island near North West River), by Erica Oberndorfer on June 11, 2021, clearly showing the short anthers, which are shorter than the sepals; glands on the leaves are also visible.  This Ribes species was also reported from Sandbanks Provincial Park, Burgeo, swNfld., by J.Maunder in 2002, but photos of that plant do not show the diagnostic short anthers (which should not exceed the sepals in length), nor the glandular leaf surface. This swNfld. report appears to be Ribes hirtellum, which has anthers longer than the sepals and petals, and stems that are usually glabrous, but sometimes have bristly internodes, and lack glandular hairs in the leaves. New collections from the NF location should be examined to confirm or correct the identification.]
