[Dr. D. Farrar's examination of Botrychium specimens from Newfoundland and Labrador confirmed the presence of both the European Botrychium lunaria type (now known as B. onondagense) and the North American type, recognized by Stensvold & Farrar (2017) as a new, recently published, diploid taxon, Botrychium neolunaria. See notes below under B. neolunaria.  Also, Gillman et al. (2024) resurrected the 1903 name Botrychium onondagense and noted the following: "The differences between B. neolunaria and B. onondagense are subtle, and we were unable to find any one morphological character that is definitive.  All characters that we investigated overlap and there is no excluded middle, rending a dichotomous key impractical." They emphasize that molecultar methods are necessary for verfied identification of B. onondagense.  See Gilman, A.V., D.R. Farrar, and M.C. Stensvold. 2024. Botrychium onondagense (Ophioglossaceaze), a resurrected species in the North American Botrychium lunaria comlex.  Am. Fern J. 114(1): 57-65.
